Sure, why not?

I only got up to 20 miles on my long runs before the holidays blew up.
While traveling to take care of my Dad's arrangements, I did very little running (maybe 3-4 miles total), and didn't have a weekly long run. Agghh. I'm a bad, bad runnergirl.
I mostly drank a lot of sweet tea and ate a lot of food.
And gained at least 5 pounds.
I have't done much since I've been back except a spin class, and a 300 meter swim.
I have some kind of muscle spasm thing in my back that started on Christmas day and won't go away. It doesn't bother me when I run, and running seems to help it, but it keeps me up at night.
I tried swimming Friday but I can't because of the back thing.
Most of the good running places around where I live are all icy.
It's colder than hell here and I'm trying to convince myself to get on the treadmill. (it's not working.)
I went on a four-mile run this morning and just couldn't seem to keep going. I wasn't really tired, I was just realllllly bored. And cold.
and, I'm going through a lazy period.
I'd rather lie in a warm bath, and do sudoku puzzles and listen to Nora Emphron on CD than work out.
The 2007 Rock-n-Roll Arizona Marathon is in one week.
I'm not sure I'm ready for it.
I'm hoping that it won't hurt me that much since this is supposed to have been taper time.
I was hoping to do it in under 6 hours. Now I'm just hoping to be able to do it!

  1. I've been sloth-like lately too. The weather is no good for biking or running. Our sidestreets have been complete ice in the early morning, so my window of opportunity to go to the gym (treadmill or pool) has been gone.

Plus I think when it is cold and icky the best thing to do is just stay in bed.

I sure hope it warms up this week.

In any event, best wishes during your marathon. No matter how long it takes you, it is still quite an accomplishment. I know for sure *I* couldn't finish a marathon right now; not even sure I could do a half.

  2. I have found that, at the end of marathon training, in the last couple weeks before the race, this motivation issue is pretty normal, and making it worse is the holidays and weather that can beat any motivation right out of a person. It sounds like you have completed most of your runs prior to this long "taper" so you should be okay. Take it easy through the water stops, use other runners and the crowd for motivation, and when all else fails, think about the nice hot bath and all the puzzles you can do afterwards. Best of luck!!! 3. As long as you've got a good base and don't try for a PR, you'll be fine!

Enjoy your 'thon (mine is next Sunday, too) and we'll compare notes after! :-)

  4. I think it's cute that you think I'd try for a PR on a marathon. There's survival and there's PR; I'm more at the former when it comes to this distance. It will be the longest I've ever gone.

  5. You have nothing to worry about. So you are being a good girl and getting your taper in..the mileage and training is all there, in the bank, you only have to draw upon it. You will be fine. As for the winter, yeah, it sucks. I live in MN and learned a few years ago that I had to make peace with winter. I wasn't moving anywhere. I now enter snowshoe marathons and go winter camping. I much rather have it be June, but I have had to made peace with January. So go have a great time at your marathon, don't forget to enjoy it! This is the party that you have been training for :)

  6. Isn't it your first marathon, so automatic PR no matter what, right? I hope it goes well for you, I'll think you'll be fine.

I got an electronic Sudoku for Christmas, so you don't even need to go through the effort of writing with a pencil (or a pen for the brave people).

  8. You will be well rested and tapered. All the base that has been laid will be there for you if you relax and enjoy the run. Don't stress!

  9. Um, you already did a 20 mile long run? I'd call these last couple of weeks a healthy taper. I'm guessing that as long as you take care of the back issue, you're gonna rock the marathon!

  10. Wow. 20 miles. You're way readier than I am - call it a taper.

    I'll miss ya!

  11. I think you will find a marathon easier than a half-iron triathlon.

My advice is to enjoy the bands and the sunshine.

Go at a comfortable pace until that last mile and then KICK IT!
